I haven't blogged in so long! Really it's iPhone's fault. It's just so much easier to use my iPhone which always has service. Our dependable neighbor with the nice, quick wireless service moved out. So now we have spotted wireless service (i.e. the account called "twobrosoneho" -- the name should say it all).
At any rate... today is my birthday! I got to sleep in this morning and my wonderful husband brought me a latte and doughnuts. This is our new tradition. My Mom always used to do breakfast in bed for birthdays and special occasions. But Rob really doesn't cook.... but he knows I have a special weakness for doughnuts and rarely indulge. The perfect solution has been born!
Plus he and Maddie got me some awesome books for my presents. He got me Watership Down, which I've been dying to read since Season 1 of Lost. And Maddie got me a board book on different types of cars (or vroom-vrooms as she knows them). I'm going out to Tea with Mom and maybe Maddie if she isn't too nap-ready.
Last year, I was very concerned that it would be my last serious birthday celebration. I was convinced Maddie would be born very close to my birthday and I figured that my birthday would always be the secondary celebration to hers. And this year, I feel exactly that way and am loving it. I'm so excited about her birthday and mine... just seems like a lovely day to kick off the Maddie season!

Maddie-isms
It's dawned on me that a few of you may not know about Maddie's attempts at speech. Of course you all know about her accusative "Maaaahhhh Meeeeeh!" abilities. But do you know that she actually has quite a vocabulary? Please envision the cutest tone of voice that has every existed while reading these...
Maddie's favorite word? "At." As in Cat. She points at her "ats" and gets all excited to see them, even calling to them. The other morning, black cat came out into the living room and I said to Maddie, "Who's that?" and she said clear as day, "Mah At." Yup, they're her cats alright. Grandma took her to the zoo. Grandma saw an elephant, Maddie saw an "At." Grandma saw a bear, Maddie saw an "At." Grandma saw a giraffe, Maddie saw an "At." And so on.
But my favorite Maddie-ism... Maddie dances, quite a lot actually. Whenever there's music, you'll see Maddie shaking her moneymaker. The other day she was standing at the coffeetable when the theme song to Elmo's World came on Sesame Street. I asked her, "Maddie do you like Elmo?" and no kidding, she looked at me like I was an idiot and said, "I LOVEH EL-O."

The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth
Have you seen this ad? It's my new favorite ad -- what an awesome message. It seems to go perfectly with all the geeky little things going on in my head right now.
I haven't been blogging very much because instead of going on my laptop, I've been using my iphone. I'm amazed by how much I use it -- despite yelling at Rob constantly for using his. It's just so much more convenient for nap time, when Maddie is asleep next to me I can easily use an iphone with no major disruption. However, I have yet to find a good blogging app -- and that means blogosphere silence.
I have however been playing Civilization Revolution -- the most awesome game ever. Not that it compares with the other Civ levels, but ever since we got out Mac, we haven't been playing Civ, and I have missed it. For those of you who don't play Civ, it's a world history game in which you rule as a famous historical leader and recreate a civilization to dominate other civilizations cultural, militarilly or economically. For those of you who know me really well, it will come as no surprise that I obsessively (seriously, obsessively) must play this game with complete historical accuracy -- settling my cities in proper historical order, building great wonders that go with my civilization and of course geographically plotting my development with the correct topographical features. Yeah, that's why I'm a geek.
Lately I've been playing as the Romans, and it's put me in a complete ancient mood. I have such a strong desire to read ancient history books, and have really been considering rereading some of the best books I've ever read, which I'm going to recommend to you again (in case you still haven't read them.) First Man in Rome and the Grass Crown both by Colleen McCullough still move me when I think about them. Despite being an ancient history buff, I never really got into Roman history. And I certainly never got in to the Roman Senate period -- if anything I always vaguely appreciated the Caesars or the bizarreness of Roman kooky emperors. But these two books made me fall in love with this period of history, and I've found myself mourning it ever since I finished reading them. They are long, but after you've gotten about 200 pages in, you'll wish they were longer.
